This archived blog covers our training for, and cycling from, Lands End to John O'Groats in June 2009.
We cycled 1054 miles and 60,000 feet in 15 days with 104 hours saddle time.
Being a blog, the entries are in "last in/first out" order. Route maps and details at at the end of the blogroll.

2009/06/11 - Day 6 - Wentnor to Acton Bridge - 69.9 miles in 6:20

Shoes were still wet, so I wore my Shimano sandals to keep my socks dry. It was a clearish sky, blue with clouds, so fingers crossed, less rain. The cycling gods were benign and it was so. We zoomed down the hill we had puffed up the evening before, checked in at the campsite for any route guidance. "Its going to be a lovely route for tandeming" we were told by those who know these things.

And it was. Hardly any hills, lots of swooping down and up, undulations and flat. Gorgeous views of countryside. England (or rather Wales) has so much countryside you don't appreciate when living in the built up south east. But best of all NO RAIN. Sun mostly, some coolish breeze. So nothing alarming to report for a change. The bike lived up to Thorn's stated braking capability, and we started to trust that we would stop. Or rather the Stoker allowed me to go over 20 mph down hill.

Us cyclists swamped the Fire Station for lunch.

Then onwards with easy riding and interesting sights such as Beeston Crag and Castle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beeston_Castle).

We left the bikes at the campsite and we taken to the hotel at Frodsham. BA organisation, excellent to date, had a minor glitch and they had delivered our bags to the other hotel. So I showered and Stoker bathed while we waited for the luggage, which only took 20 mins to come.

Lovely views over Runcorn and the Mersey from our window.

  1. At last! A fine day with no dramas. Just what the Stoker ordered. Glad the God Shimano and his Saint Derailleur were kind. Happens I know Frodsham and it has lovely views over the ICI Chemical Works at Runcorn, to the right, with the Stanlow Oil Refinery to the right. Mmmmm. Nice.

  4. Stuart, in addition to your many other talents you are becoming a good writer! Fascinating story, I hope you and Cherrie are enjoying it as much as we are enjoying reading it.

    Reg and Gayle.

  5. Ribchester was the home of my sunday school camp. Thank God you are staying in Bothwell not Motherwell ( my birthplace and home town till we moved to Glasgow. It's all Glasgow now of course. Motherwell to Inverary is a bloody long way. May the tandem Gods be with you? I think I am your biggest fan!
